Hi, I'm Brian Jones I'm a software engineer with over 5 years of experience building scalable software for the web, primarily on top of AWS. I have a varied skill set, but find myself most comfortable working on backend software. I enjoy learning new technology and enjoy the challenge that comes with it. I enjoy working with others, and discussing technology. My teaching and mentorship style is collaborative, if I don't know the answer, or aren't as familiar with a topic I enjoy diving in and learning together. Currently I work at Built In as a data engineer, and work across the whole stack. (AWS, terraform, cloudflare, VueJS, Go, Python, DBT, snowflake).

I'm a passionate about IT. I really love to understand how each piece engage with each other in this big puzzle Internet and computering is. I don't like to work without having all the understanding needed to analyze and solve any problem in each matter I work with. Those are the reasons why FLOSS (Free/Libre OpenSource Software) is other of my passions, because working with FLOSS allows you to look into any problem until you find the exact line of code that is causing trouble. Those are not the only reasons I love FLOSS, of course. I love working in community, demonstrating the power of the crowd intelligence and making this world a better place. My goal in my professional life is to create some start-ups under my own agile/devop culture influenced convincements, merging businesss and technical automation with simple ideas and products. KISS. I won't describe my skills in this summary, that's supposed to be supported by my experience :]

I am running RealSoftService, a consultancy for WebApplication Development in Beijing. We help foreign businesses in China to get a better web experience and adapting their site to chinese needs. We achieve this by using a modern architecture that allows more flexibility in making large changes without needing to start from scratch. I am a mentor for the Beijing GNU/Linux User Group, guiding the group as they organize meetings with speakers, dinners, hackathons, supporting local conferences and visitors to Beijing. I am a mentor for FOSSASIA, and organization that supports and promotes Free Software Projects in Asia. I work with students on Google Summer of Code and Google Code-In projects. I also mentor students and give them industry experience through internships in my company. I am using and developing Free Software and Open Source for more than 20 years. I am writing front-end code with Aurelia and Angular.js in Javascript, Coffeescript and Typescript. I have extensive back-end experience, implementing a RESTful API for a backend-as-a-service platform, writing modules and features for various applications with Pike, Python, Ruby, TCL, PHP, Java, Perl and XSLT, for django, laravel and other platforms, developing a CMS and building multilingual websites. Other experience includes developing a task manager and a data tracker in Common Lisp, leading teams to develop a weblog and other webapplications, working on email filtering, testing educational games, packaging GNU/Linux applications, implementing a chat server, refactoring customers code, implementing an SMTP server, co-editing a book on the Pike Programming Language, organizing conferences and events and more. I have been building websites since 1995, working in Austria, Germany, USA, Latvia, New Zealand, Singapore and China. My greatest strength is the ability to work with unknown systems. I love the challenge of not knowing the situation, using whatever resources available to me and drawing on past experience to analyze and solve the problem at hand. I can pick up new programming languages and be productive within days.

“As someone who is very new to programming, I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. He was incredibly patient, explained things clearly, and never made me feel like my questions were too basic. I came into the session feeling overwhelmed, but he broke things down in a way that actually made sense. It’s clear he knows his stuff and genuinely enjoys helping others.“

“I recommend Lucas for his exceptional guidance in DevOps integrations and pipeline automation. He helped me debug complex issues and develop a deep understanding of DevOps methodologies, CI automation, and product integration all within a challenging on-premise legacy environment using BCM, a local container registry, and artifact management with mirroring. Lucas is a true expert who didn’t just solve problems for me but taught me how to approach and solve them myself. His support and deep knowledge made all the difference. It was a pleasure learning from him.“
