I am a long-time [open-source contributor and Linux enthusiast](https://www.archlinux.org/people/developer-fellows/#schiv). In the past I spent most of my time staring at black screens with green text scrolling endlessly for hours and days. I am now a practitioner of [Knowledge Science](https://www.infoworld.com/article/3448577/who-should-be-responsible-for-your-data-the-knowledge-scientist.html), an emerging subdiscipline of Computer Science allied with the goals of [explainable](https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2019/12/30/explainable-ai-the-rising-role-of-knowledge-scientists/#395937a2603f), ["semantic"](https://www.poolparty.biz/semantic-ai/) artificial intelligence (AI). With a background in the [Semantic Web](https://www.dataversity.net/semantic-web-and-semantic-technology-trends-in-2020/#) and traditional [symbolic AI](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_representation_and_reasoning), I am a graph database specialist fully invested in data modelling and programming with semantic technologies. While as a Computer Scientist I am inclined on research and development (R&D), nothing gives me more satisfaction than building or leading a software technology project from inception to production, especially so at the bleeding-edge. I regret that I may be time-constrained, but you are welcome to check in with me for quick consultations.

Hello, My name is Derek. I teach programming and design for The Web & I help build serious design teams. https://sheriffderek.consulting I can certainly help with one-off issues, but I think I can be the most help to people who want to learn from the ground up. I built the curriculum at https://perpetual.education I learned everything the hard way. You shouldn't have to. There are so many 'frameworks' and buzz-words - and while so many people are creating things to make our lives easier, those tools can cloud what is actually happening and make learning some messy business. Just because someone is a great developer doesn't mean they are suited to teach. Many developers lack the empathy or memory to explain concepts without making assumptions about where the mentee is coming from. I'll make sure you learn WHY you write markup and what a CSS rule actually is - instead of showing you how to use bootstrap and other abstracted libraries of opinionated functions. I won't expect you to know what I mean when I say 'library' or 'terminal' or 'npm' or 'pass it in' until I've listened to your goals and heard about your background. I'll walk you through everything in order of importance to your unique understanding of the languages and help find the blind spots you may have. I believe that a solid foundation, while it may feel slightly slower at first, will ensure you cut through all of the churn of the changing code climate in the future. I'm not a JavaScript wizard, but I can explain what beginners need to know - better than most seasoned developers - and I can get you to a place where you can begin to ask the right questions. I'm an expert with CSS and responsive layout. I'll set you on the path to reusable/modular code that will be easier to write and maintain. I can help you sort through the hype and ensure you don't get stuck in the mud. In my experience, pair programming is by far the best way to learn. Let's discuss. If I can't help you ~ you won't be charged. My codementor rate is considerably lower than my standard rate because I expect to learn from our interactions as much as you do. I feel that pair programming is the best way to learn and that both parties benefit.

“Kian hopped on quickly and we got right down to business. He was great. He did not start the clock until after a quick get-to-know-you. We coded up a couple of quick tests to find out what was wrong with my React/MERN app on Render hosting. Fortunately we solved it. Unfortunately it all boiled down to a mistake that Render should fix (Extra space(s) in rewrite rules will not be trimmed and will break your site, even though the build appears successful). Once the issue was solved he stopped the clock immediately, even though he still wanted to look at a few things to ensure that we had solved it. I thought that was super kind. Great guy. Easy. Cool. Laid back. Smart, and clearly experienced.“

“On my first impression on him based on his feedback on my request, I was convinced that he knows very well the thing that he is doing and analyzing. During our session, he explains well and really let you feel that he really knows what he is doing. He also goes beyond the extra miles of doing some research before having our second session. He is a trustworthy mentor unlike some I experienced who claims they know how to do it but time passes by in our sessions and no progress. He also not charging so much. I'm lucky that I have chosen him as my code mentor.“
